Giving (and receiving) Thanks, Mind & Body

Submitted by jwhiteman on Thu, 08/12/2010 - 10:04

As much as I try not to, quite often when someone thanks me for something, I dismiss it with an "it's no problem" or "no worries." Is this really the most gracious way for me to accept and acknowledge someone's genuine gratitude? Where does this dismissive-ness come from? It doesn't take much soul searching to realize that in this world of immediate gratification, texting and internet messaging, that slowing down and choosing the appropriate words with which to respond to another human being somehow seems unnaturally formal or too rigid. Is it not a measure of one's own feelings of self worth to look a person in the eye and take the moment required to say "you're welcome?"

Could it not also be that we do this type of thing to ourselves as well, our minds allowing us to deny gratitude to our own bodies? Is your hair dry from summer surf, sun and sand? Quench it's thirst with a Keratin conditioning treatment and good take home care. Breaking out from hormones or stress? Get a free consultation with a skincare expert and learn how to treat your skin with a personalized home-care regime with professional quality products. Cracked heels and ragged cuticles? Invest in a quality nourishing cream and put it on under cotton gloves and socks at bedtime.

Taking the time to reflect on what our bodies are asking of us and then fulfilling those needs is showing gratitude to someone truly deserving of it-you.

And yes, you are very welcome.
